NZTA - SH1 PUHOI TO WARKWORTH:

CN8A CULVERT CONSTRUCTION, EARTHWORKS, STREAM DIVERSION

CLIENT: NX2 - Northern Express Group Contractor

COMPLETED: 2019

With a depth from pavement to invert of 45mtrs deep, this is most likely the deepest culvert ever to be installed on a NZTA Roading project. This project involved the construction of a Triple Barrel 3x large diameter Stormwater culvert, consisting of 1x 2500 dia. pipe & 2x 2000 dia. pipes, at a 220m length across the main SH1 Motorway alignment.

The project had significant challenges, outlined below:

  1. Highly sensitive Clean stream diversion works with full electro-fishing for relocation of fish eels and freshwater crayfish.

  2. Cutting through a large Rock Bluff, Rock Stabilisation work, and Shear Key works.

  3. Placing of flowable fill (approx. 3,300m3) as backfill to keep the culvert safe from high overburden loads.

  4. One million m3 of fill placed on top of Culvert pipes, filled to 45m height above invert of pipe to top of road pavement alignment.

Due to the complex challenges, P&I provided the client with a detailed pre-construction methodology using 3D modelling. P&I’s use of 3D modelling at the planning phase helped to reach planning consensus for a one of the most challenging areas of the P2Wk project critical path, and ensured effective & efficient completion of the works at the actual construction phase.

The works were carried out with high level implementation of health & safety procedures, quality assurance and strict environmental awareness, with none of the approx 3,300m3 of flowable fill concrete reaching the diverted stream.

Precision prior planning was required due to difficult access and rough terrain. The extra time spent planning and 3D modelling meant that only minor methodology adjustments were made during construction, allowing execution to go as planned.

CS6 STORMWATER CULVERT AND STRUCTURES

CLIENT: NX2 - Northern Express Group Contractor

COMPLETED: 2019

This project involved the construction of a Quad Barrel 4x large diameter Stormwater culvert, consisting of 3x 2000mm dia. HDPE pipes and 1x 2500mm dia. HDPE pipe.

Our work involved environment-sensitive works such as pouring 4,000m3 of flowable fill adjacent to a live stream without incident, and was lauded by the client. Constructing a low-flow channel and fish baffles for the safe movement of fish along the pipe. Also, undertaking clean stream channel and bypass pumping works.

The works were carried out with high level implementation of health & safety procedures, quality assurance. This project was complted during Winter and had strict environmental controls and awareness onsite, with none of the approx 4,000m3 of flowable fill concrete reaching the live stream.

PROCUREMENT AND INSTALLATION OF N2F 11x 2400mm BARREL CULVERT

CLIENT: NX2 - Northern Express Group Contractor

COMPLETED: ONGOING

This project involved the construction of an unique 11x Barrel Culvert consisting of 11x 2400 dia. culvert pipes and 2x 40mtr Inlet & Outlet Wall Structures across the main new SH1 Motorway alignment.

This culverts main purpose is to drain stormwater away in a one in 100year flood from the low lying farm land areas, due to the SH1 motorway pavement alignment being raised along this section in Warkworth.

P&I developed a pre-construction methodology using 3D modelling to showcase the possible real-time scenarios at site during the construction phase. This model illustrated the clients the step-by-step activity of the process required to manage interactions with the clients concurrent activities along the project critical path.

The methodology also was designed to reduce H&S risks with the interactions between heavy earthmoving machinery and workers on the ground.

Scope of works:

  • Dewatering

  • Bulk Open earthworks.

  • Ground improvement works – Installing raft layers with PET1200 cloth.

  • Construction of 11x 2400 dia. Culvert Pipes x 42.5m across the main new SH1 Motorway alignment.

  • Construction of 40m long Wingwall Inlet & Outlet Structures. Installing multiple 14T precast concrete panels. Install steel. Pouring concrete blinding, footing, for 2x 40m long base slab installations.

NZTA SH20A TO AIRPORT MOTORWAY

CLIENT: Manukau Harbour Kirkbride Alliance (MHX)

YEAR: 2016 to 2017

SH20A is the primary route to and from Auckland Airport and forms a strategic link between the Western Ring Route (SH20 and SH16), the Airport Business District and the greater Auckland area.

To improve journey time reliability to the airport, and to improve safety at this intersection, a trench will be constructed under Kirkbride Road to separate motorway traffic from local traffic.

This grade separated intersection at the SH20A/Kirkbride Road intersection will allow motorway traffic to pass underneath Kirkbride Road to and from the airport more efficiently.

P&I's scope on this project was to install drainage & services and associated structures at various locations along the motorway project and assist with multiple aspects of motorway and local road widenings.

WOOLSTON TRUNK MAIN REPLACEMENT

CLIENT: Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) - Downers

COMPLETED: 2016

Replacement of existing DN700 trunk main, damaged during the Christchurch Earthquakes, and replace with DN700 GRP pipeline. Also replaced were the local submain and associated manhole structures along damaged section.

Excavation depths up to  5mtrs deep in poor ground conditions with high water table. Well point de-watering with multiple pumps was used to deal with high volume of ground water. Extensive wastewater bypass pumping was used to contend with existing flows while works were undertaken.

NORTHERN RELIEF TRUNK MAIN

CLIENT: Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) - Downers

COMPLETED: 2016

The Northern Relief Trunk Main conveys wastewater for approximately 70,000 people from the north and west of the Christchurch to the Christchurch City Council (CCC) Pump Station 1 on Woodham Road. The Northern Relief Trunk Main is considered a critical asset within the CCC wastewater network.

The existing main suffered significant damage during the Canterbury Earthquakes, particularly in the vicinity of the Avon River where there was evidence of liquefaction, settlement and lateral spread.

The existing alignment is largely through the Residential Red Zone and crosses beneath the Avon River via an inverted siphon.

The new alignment (installing 1400mm diameter GRP pipe) typically ran along Council owned carriageways (Retreat Road and Eveleyn Couzins Avenue) and across Council owned land currently occupied by Pump Station 8 and community buildings.

KILMORE ST - SOUTH CATCHMENT

CLIENT: Christchurch City Council (SCRIT)

YEAR: 2013

This section of work involved open trench replacement of 2km of earthquake damaged wastewater pipe inside the Christchurch Central Business District along Durham St, Hereford St, Montreal St, Cambridge Tce for the 'Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team' (SCIRT) for Christchurch City Council.

This required excavating outside and renewing wastewater pipes to high profile building sites such as the Christchurch City Council Building, Christchurch Police Headquarters Building, Christchurch Arts Centre and the Christchurch Art Gallery all of which had survived the earthquakes.

The Christchurch Art Gallery building was used as the NZ Civil Defence headquarters for Christchurch following the 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes.
